Thanksgiving Reading Comprehension
📖 Part 1: Read the Story
The First Thanksgiving
Long ago in 1621, a group of people called Pilgrims sailed across the ocean from England to America. They wanted to find a new place to live and practice their religion freely. The journey was very hard, and when they arrived, they didn't know how to grow food in this new land.
The Native Americans, especially the Wampanoag people, already lived in America. They knew how to plant corn, beans, and squash. A Native American named Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to grow these crops and catch fish. Without this help, the Pilgrims might not have survived their first year.
When harvest time came in the fall, the Pilgrims had plenty of food. They were so grateful that they decided to have a big feast to celebrate and give thanks. They invited their Native American friends to join them. The feast lasted for three days! They ate turkey, corn, beans, squash, and other foods they had grown together.
This celebration became known as the first Thanksgiving. It was a time when two different groups of people came together to share food, friendship, and gratitude for their successful harvest.
