Animal Farm Chapter 8 Review
Chapter 8: A self-contained recap
Napoleon now receives grand titles, while Squealer praises his leadership and reports figures meant to show that life on the farm is improving. The animals work hard, and the windmill is being rebuilt. Napoleon negotiates with the neighboring farmers Pilkington and Frederick. After a complicated deal, Frederick pays for timber with forged banknotes. Soon afterward, Frederick and his men attack the farm. They use explosives to destroy the windmill, but the animals drive them off in the Battle of the Windmill. The animals are badly hurt, yet Squealer calls the fight a victory. Later, the pigs find whisky and drink it. When they become ill, Squealer announces that Napoleon is dying. Napoleon recovers, and a commandment is altered to allow drinking alcohol “to excess.” At the end of the chapter, the animals hear that the pigs are planning to buy a field for barley.
