Carver's Early Years Discovery

Read the passage about George Washington Carver. Then use details from the passage to solve each question. For questions asking for evidence, point to a specific sentence or fact.
George Washington Carver was born in Missouri during the Civil War, around 1864. He and his mother were enslaved, and when George was still a baby, raiders took them away. George was later found, but his mother was never returned to him. Moses and Susan Carver, the people who had enslaved his family, raised George and his brother James. After slavery ended, the Carvers cared for the boys and taught them to read and write. George was often sick as a child, so he could not always do heavy farm work. Instead, he watched plants and animals closely. He wanted to know why leaves changed color and how seeds grew. Neighbors sometimes brought him sick plants. George studied them and tried to help them recover. People began calling him the “plant doctor.” George also wanted to learn in school. The local school for Black children was far away, and the school near the Carver farm did not accept Black students. As a young teenager, George left home to find a school. He traveled from place to place, working for food and a place to sleep. At last, he found a school that would teach him. His curiosity and determination helped shape the scientist and teacher he would become.
