Read the complete story below. Then answer the questions using details from the story. Courage can mean facing danger, speaking up, or doing what is right even when it feels uncomfortable.

The Science Fair Switch

Malik had spent weeks building a model that showed how a small wind turbine could charge a battery. On the morning of the science fair, he set it beside Diego’s and Gabriela’s projects. The three friends planned to explain their displays together. Just before the judges arrived, Malik noticed that the cord powering their demonstration ran across the aisle. A visitor could trip over it. Diego said they could leave it there for only a few minutes. Gabriela pointed out that the cord also looked like it might be frayed near the plug. Malik felt his face grow hot. He worried that moving the display would make their team look unprepared. Still, he unplugged the demonstration and told the fair coordinator about the cord. The coordinator thanked him and brought a safe replacement. While they waited, Malik explained the turbine using his diagrams instead. When the judges came by, one asked why the demonstration was not running. Malik explained what he had noticed and how the team had handled it. The judge nodded. “Careful scientists notice problems and speak up,” she said. After the fair, Diego admitted that he had been afraid the team would lose points. Gabriela said Malik’s choice had helped everyone feel safer. Malik was glad the turbine had worked eventually, but he was prouder that he had not ignored a risk just to avoid embarrassment.
