Earth's Movements and Tides

Read the field notes and solve each investigation. Use evidence from the notes in your explanations.

Field notes

Earth spins, or rotates, on an imaginary line called its axis. One rotation takes about 24 hours. The side facing the Sun has daytime; the side turned away has nighttime. Earth also travels around the Sun. One trip takes about 365¼ days. Earth's axis is tilted about 23.5° and points in nearly the same direction throughout its orbit. As Earth travels around the Sun, each hemisphere takes turns leaning toward the Sun. A hemisphere tilted toward the Sun gets more direct sunlight and longer days, bringing summer; when tilted away, it gets less direct sunlight and shorter days, bringing winter. Seasons are caused by Earth's tilt and orbit—not by Earth being much closer to the Sun. At the two equinoxes each year, daylight and darkness are close to equal. Around the June and December solstices, one hemisphere has its longest or shortest day of the year. The Moon's gravity pulls on Earth's oceans, creating tidal bulges. As Earth rotates through these bulges, many coastal places experience two high tides and two low tides in about a day. The Sun's gravity also affects tides. When the Sun, Earth, and Moon line up at new moon or full moon, their pulls combine to make a larger tidal range: spring tides. At first- and third-quarter moon, the pulls partly work against each other, making a smaller tidal range: neap tides. “Spring tide” describes a larger tidal range; it does not mean the season of spring.

Investigation 1: Earth's movements

1.A town is on the side of Earth facing away from the Sun. What time of day is it there, and what movement causes this cycle?
2.Which statement correctly compares Earth's rotation and revolution?
  • Rotation takes about 24 hours; revolution around the Sun takes about 365¼ days.
  • Rotation takes about 365¼ days; revolution takes about 24 hours.
  • Both take about 24 hours.
  • Both take about 365¼ days.
3.Fill in the blanks: Earth's axis is tilted about degrees. Earth's tilt and its trip around the Sun cause the changing in each hemisphere.
4.Ethan says, “It is summer because Earth is much closer to the Sun.” Use the field notes to correct her explanation.
5.Which pair of events has approximately equal daylight and darkness?
  • The March and September equinoxes
  • The June and December solstices
  • The new moon and full moon
  • The spring and neap tides

Investigation 2: Ocean tides

6.What is the main cause of Earth's ocean tidal bulges, and what happens as Earth rotates through them at many coastal places?
7.Use the field notes. Which arrangement of the Sun, Earth, and Moon produces a larger tidal range, and what is that tide called?
8.At first-quarter moon, the Sun and Moon are at right angles as seen from Earth. Is the tidal range generally larger or smaller than during a spring tide? Explain why.
9.True or false: A spring tide must happen during the season of spring. Explain what “spring” means in the name.
10.A coastal observer records two high tides and two low tides during a day. Explain how Earth's rotation and the ocean bulges help account for this pattern.
