Rock Cycle Worksheet

Rocks change over time as they move through Earth’s rock cycle. Read each question carefully. Use the rock-cycle notes below to investigate how rocks form and change.

Read the field notes

Magma is melted rock beneath Earth’s surface. When magma or lava cools and hardens, it forms igneous rock. Weathering breaks rock into smaller pieces, and erosion moves those pieces. The pieces are called sediment. After sediment is deposited in layers, compaction presses it together and cementation glues it into sedimentary rock. Heat and pressure can change existing rock into a different rock type without melting it. If rock melts, it becomes magma again. Any rock type can change into another type through the right processes.

Investigate the cycle

1.Emily is studying melted rock beneath Earth’s surface. What is it called?
  • Lava
  • Magma
  • Sediment
  • Cementation
2.At a volcano, melted rock flows onto Earth’s surface. What is this melted rock called?
3.Chloe finds a rock formed after molten rock cooled and hardened. Which rock type is it?
  • Igneous
  • Sedimentary
  • Metamorphic
4.Put these events in order to show how loose sediment can become sedimentary rock: compaction and cementation; deposition in layers; weathering and erosion.
5.Elijah’s rock is buried deep underground. Heat and pressure change it, but it does not melt. What type of rock can form?
  • Igneous
  • Sedimentary
  • Metamorphic
6.True or false: Erosion breaks rock into smaller pieces, while weathering moves the pieces to a new place.
TrueFalse
7.Use the field notes: What two processes help turn deposited sediment into solid sedimentary rock?
8.A piece of sedimentary rock is heated and squeezed deep underground, but it stays solid. Describe what may happen to it and name the process.
9.If any rock type melts completely, what material does it become? What can form if that material cools and hardens?
10.Why is the set of rock-forming processes called a cycle? Give one example of a rock changing from one form to another.
