The Lantern at the Tide Pool

At the edge of a small coastal town, a narrow path led down to a tide pool. One evening, Maia noticed a glow beneath the rocks. She crouched close. A tiny blue lantern, no bigger than a plum, blinked in the dark. “Please,” whispered a voice, “help me find the sea.” Maia looked around, but no one was there. The tide was rising, and the pool was filling fast. She could have run for an adult, but the little lantern flickered again. Maia cupped it gently in both hands. Cold water slipped over her boots as she followed the pool’s winding edge. At last, she found a channel leading out to the open sea. A wave rolled in—WHOOSH!—and carried the lantern away. For a moment, the water was dark. Then a line of blue lights shimmered across the bay, as if the stars had fallen into the sea. Maia smiled. She had not found out who spoke, but she knew the lantern was home.
