Sumerian Civilization History Worksheet

Travel back to ancient Mesopotamia. Read the evidence, then use it to solve each historian’s challenge. Answer in complete sentences when asked.

Read the evidence

Sumer was a region in southern Mesopotamia, between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, in what is now Iraq. By about 3500 BCE, people there had built some of the world’s earliest cities, including Uruk and Ur. The rivers supplied water, but floods could be unpredictable. Sumerians dug canals and built levees to bring water to fields and protect them. Farmers grew crops such as barley. Extra food helped support builders, traders, priests, and other workers. Sumerian cities were independent city-states, each with its own ruler and patron god. A large stepped temple called a ziggurat stood at the heart of many cities. Sumerians developed cuneiform, a system of writing made by pressing wedge-shaped marks into damp clay with a reed stylus. Early records helped people track goods, taxes, and work. Sumerians also used a number system based on 60. Its influence survives in the 60 minutes in an hour and 360 degrees in a circle. Historians learn about Sumer from objects and written records, including clay tablets, tools, buildings, and seals. These sources offer clues, but they do not tell us everything about how people lived.

1.Sumer was in southern Mesopotamia, in the region now called Iraq. Which two rivers shaped this region?
2.Match each Sumerian feature with the job it helped people do.
  • Canals and levees
  • Cuneiform on clay tablets
  • Number system based on 60
  • Record goods, taxes, and work
  • Provide a system whose influence remains in time and angle measurement
  • Bring water to fields and reduce flood damage
3.A farmer’s field is far from the river. Explain how a canal could help the farmer, and name one challenge Sumerians faced with river water.
4.Choose the best explanation for how growing extra food could help a city become more complex.
  • Everyone had to become a farmer.
  • Some people could do other jobs, such as building, trading, or keeping records.
  • The rivers stopped flooding completely.
  • Cities no longer needed rulers.
5.True or false: Every Sumerian city-state was governed as part of one united kingdom with the same ruler.
TrueFalse
6.Complete the sentence: A ziggurat was a large, stepped that stood at the heart of many Sumerian cities.
7.A clay tablet has wedge-shaped marks pressed into it with a reed stylus. What Sumerian writing system does this clue point to?
8.Name one familiar measurement that still reflects the Sumerian base-60 number system.
  • 12 months in a year
  • 60 minutes in an hour
  • 10 fingers on two hands
  • 7 days in a week
9.An archaeologist finds a clay tablet listing barley deliveries to a temple. What can this source help historians learn? Give one reasonable idea, and one thing the tablet alone may not reveal.
10.Explain how rivers, irrigation, and a food surplus could connect to the growth of Sumerian cities. Use at least two details from the passage.
