At the top of the school’s oldest staircase, Andre discovered a narrow door. It opened into a quiet room beneath the bell tower. Dust floated in the sunlight, and a little brass bell rested on a shelf. Near the window, a blue paper kite lay folded beside a stack of books. “Someone left a story up here,” Andre whispered. He opened the top book, and a pressed red leaf slipped onto the floor. Outside, the school bell rang, but in the tower room the moment seemed to pause.
