Canada's Growing Nation

Read the timeline and the short source, then complete the activities. Use evidence from the page to explain how Canada grew from Confederation to 1914.

Timeline: Canada, 1867–1914

Confederation began with four provinces. Canada expanded west and east over the next decades.

1 July 1867 — Confederation: Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick formed the Dominion of Canada.

1870 — Manitoba joined; the North-West Territories were transferred to Canada.

1871 — British Columbia joined, after Canada promised a railway link to the rest of the country.

1873 — Prince Edward Island joined Canada.

1885 — The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was completed, linking eastern Canada with the Pacific coast.

1898 — The Yukon Territory was created; it was a territory, not a province.

1905 — Alberta and Saskatchewan became provinces.

After Confederation, Canada’s leaders wanted to connect distant regions and encourage settlement in the West. The National Policy, introduced in 1879, included tariffs—taxes on some imported goods—to protect Canadian manufacturers. The government also supported railway building and western settlement. The CPR made travel and shipping across the country easier, but building it required difficult work and had serious consequences for Indigenous communities. Many newcomers arrived from Europe and elsewhere. They faced long journeys, unfamiliar climates, and the challenge of finding land and work. Canada’s growth brought opportunity for some, while also increasing pressure on Indigenous lands and communities.

Use the timeline and reading for Questions 1–10.

1.On what date did Confederation begin, and which four provinces formed Canada at that time?
2.Put these events in chronological order by writing 1–4 beside each: Alberta and Saskatchewan become provinces; Manitoba joins; Prince Edward Island joins; British Columbia joins.
3.Circle the territory, not a province: Manitoba / Yukon / Alberta. What year was it created?
4.Which railway was completed in 1885, and what two places did it link?
5.A shopkeeper says, “A tariff can make imported goods cost more and give Canadian factories protection from some foreign competition.” Which part of the National Policy is the shopkeeper describing?
6.True or false: The timeline says the Yukon joined Canada as a province in 1898. Correct the statement if it is false.
TrueFalse
7.Give two ways the CPR helped Canada grow, using details from the reading or timeline.
8.Name two challenges newcomers could face when settling in Canada during this period.
9.The reading says railway construction had serious consequences for Indigenous communities. Describe one impact it identifies, and explain why it is important to include this perspective when studying growth.
10.Was railway building alone responsible for Canada’s growth from 1867 to 1914? Write a claim and support it with two details from this worksheet.
