French Revolution Quiz

Read the historical briefing, then use it to help answer the questions. The French Revolution brought major changes to France beginning in 1789. Answer every question; for the timeline, put the events in chronological order.
In the late 1700s, French society was divided into three estates. The First Estate was the clergy, the Second Estate was the nobility, and the Third Estate included most other people, from wealthy business owners to peasants. The first two estates had privileges, while many people in the Third Estate carried a heavy tax burden. France also faced serious debt, poor harvests and rising food prices. In 1789, representatives of the Third Estate formed the National Assembly and pledged in the Tennis Court Oath not to separate until France had a constitution. On 14 July, a crowd in Paris stormed the Bastille, a fortress and prison that had become a symbol of royal authority. Later that summer, fear of attacks and rumours spread through the countryside in a period called the Great Fear. The National Assembly ended many feudal privileges and adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. France became a republic in 1792. King Louis XVI was executed in January 1793. During the Reign of Terror, from 1793 to 1794, revolutionary leaders used executions and other harsh measures against people they considered enemies of the revolution. Maximilien Robespierre became one of the most influential leaders of this period. He was executed in 1794, and the Reign of Terror came to an end. The revolution changed ideas about citizenship, rights and political power, although France continued to face conflict and instability.
