Skip counting by 7s to 100
This hundreds chart covers 1 to 100 with every multiple of 7 highlighted. Counting in 7s goes 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and on, 14 numbers in all, finishing at 98. Each highlighted number is 7 more than the one before it.
- Counting in
- 7s
- Chart covers
- 1 to 100
- How many multiples highlighted
- 14
- First five
- 7, 14, 21, 28, 35
- Last multiple on the chart
- 98
- The same as
- the 7 times table — 7 × 1 up to 7 × 14
- Skip counting in 7s and the 7 times table are the same list of numbers reached two ways: by repeatedly adding 7, or by multiplying 7 by 1, 2, 3 and so on. The 14th multiple is 7 × 14 = 98.
- 100 ÷ 7 ≈ 14.2857, which is why 14 multiples of 7 fit inside 100; the next one, 105, would be past 100, so the chart stops at 98.
- Highlighting the multiples on a chart ten columns wide turns the 7 times table into a shape. The pattern of the shading is the point — it is the same fact seen as a picture rather than a list.
- Counting backwards down the highlighted numbers is division practice: from 98, taking away 7 at a time reaches 0 after exactly 14 steps.
- A number is a multiple of 7 if counting in 7s lands on it exactly — 98 does. A number sitting between two highlighted squares does not, and how far past the lower one it sits is the remainder when it is divided by 7.
