  • Skip counting in 9s and the 9 times table are the same list of numbers reached two ways: by repeatedly adding 9, or by multiplying 9 by 1, 2, 3 and so on. The 11th multiple is 9 × 11 = 99.
  • 100 ÷ 9 ≈ 11.1111, which is why 11 multiples of 9 fit inside 100; the next one, 108, would be past 100, so the chart stops at 99.
  • Highlighting the multiples on a chart ten columns wide turns the 9 times table into a shape. The pattern of the shading is the point — it is the same fact seen as a picture rather than a list.
  • Counting backwards down the highlighted numbers is division practice: from 99, taking away 9 at a time reaches 0 after exactly 11 steps.
  • A number is a multiple of 9 if counting in 9s lands on it exactly — 99 does. A number sitting between two highlighted squares does not, and how far past the lower one it sits is the remainder when it is divided by 9.
