This hundreds chart covers 1 to 100 with every multiple of 8 highlighted. Counting in 8s goes 8, 16, 24, 32, 40 and on, 12 numbers in all, finishing at 96. Each highlighted number is 8 more than the one before it.

  • Skip counting in 8s and the 8 times table are the same list of numbers reached two ways: by repeatedly adding 8, or by multiplying 8 by 1, 2, 3 and so on. The 12th multiple is 8 × 12 = 96.
  • 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5, which is why 12 multiples of 8 fit inside 100; the next one, 104, would be past 100, so the chart stops at 96.
  • Highlighting the multiples on a chart ten columns wide turns the 8 times table into a shape. The pattern of the shading is the point — it is the same fact seen as a picture rather than a list.
  • Counting backwards down the highlighted numbers is division practice: from 96, taking away 8 at a time reaches 0 after exactly 12 steps.
  • A number is a multiple of 8 if counting in 8s lands on it exactly — 96 does. A number sitting between two highlighted squares does not, and how far past the lower one it sits is the remainder when it is divided by 8.
