Most of us learned spelling from a list on Monday and a test on Friday, and forgot the words by the next Monday. Homeschooling gives you the chance to do it properly: teach the patterns and rules that govern about 85 percent of English words, practise them in real writing, and leave the genuinely irregular words for memorisation.

What spelling looks like at each stage
Use this as a checklist, not a schedule. Children move through it at their own pace, and a strong year can cover two stages.
Kindergarten to grade 2
Ages 5–8- Spelling is phonics in reverse. As each pattern is read, it is also written: CVC words, blends, digraphs, then long-vowel patterns.
- Dictation of words and short sentences using taught patterns. No lists of unrelated words.
- Invented spelling in free writing is fine and expected; correct spelling is practised in the dedicated lesson.
- A small set of high-frequency irregular words (said, was, of) learned by sight.
Grades 3–5
Ages 8–11- Rules with real coverage: doubling before -ing, silent e, plural rules, i-before-e and its exceptions, soft c and g.
- Word families by pattern, with sorting activities rather than copying.
- Homophones and commonly confused words in context.
- Personal spelling list drawn from the child's own writing errors, reviewed weekly.
Middle school and up
Ages 11–18- Morphology: prefixes, suffixes, Greek and Latin roots, which teaches spelling and vocabulary together.
- Spelling folded into editing: the child proofreads their own drafts with a checklist and a dictionary.
- Subject vocabulary: science and history terms spelled correctly because they are used weekly.
- By high school, spelling is no longer a subject; it is a habit of careful proofreading plus a spellchecker used well.

Avoid these
Mistakes that make spelling harder than it needs to be
- Random word lists. A list of 'zebra, because, thought, elephant' teaches nothing transferable. Group by pattern.
- Testing without teaching. Show the rule, sort the words, dictate sentences. The test is the least useful part.
- Ignoring the child's own errors. The words they misspell in their writing are the most valuable list you have.
- Starting a spelling program before phonics is secure. Until about grade 2, spelling is the writing half of the phonics lesson.
- Making a teenager do spelling as a subject. Teach proofreading and roots instead; the spelling comes with them.

What is the best homeschool spelling curriculum?

When should homeschoolers start spelling?
Formally around the end of grade 1 or in grade 2, once the child decodes fluently. Before that, spelling is simply the writing side of each phonics lesson.
How many spelling words a week?
Ten to fifteen words that share a pattern is plenty in elementary. Quality of practice matters far more than list length.
My child reads well but cannot spell. Why?
Reading uses recognition; spelling requires recall and is harder. Strong readers often skip phonics practice and never learn the patterns explicitly. A rules-based program like All About Spelling or Logic of English usually fixes it within a year or two.
Should I use spelling tests?
Sentence dictation is a better check than a word test: it shows whether the child can spell the word while thinking about something else, which is what real writing demands.
