Sound is a type of energy that travels as a wave. When an object vibrates — like a guitar string or a drum skin — it pushes and pulls the air particles around it. These particles bump into neighbouring particles, passing the energy along. This creates a sound wave. Sound needs a medium (like air, water, or a solid) to travel through. It cannot travel through empty space (a vacuum).
