Explore how friendship, belonging and everyday choices can strengthen a community. Read the scenario, then answer each question. For personal-reflection questions, sample answers are provided as examples; your own thoughtful answer may be different.

At lunchtime, Maia notices that Ari, who has recently joined the school, is sitting alone near the courts. Maia asks if Ari would like to join her group’s low-pressure frisbee game. Ari says yes, but prefers to watch first. Maia respects that choice and explains the rules. Later, the group disagrees about teams. One student suggests leaving Ari out because they do not know the game yet. Maia suggests making mixed teams and showing the rules together. Ari joins in when ready. At the end, Maia checks whether Ari enjoyed the game and listens to the answer.

Connection, care and belonging

A whakataukī included in the original activity is: “Kāore he tangata tauhou i kōnei, engari he hoa kāore noa i tūtaki” — “No one is a stranger here, only friends who have not yet met.” It invites people to approach others with openness. Whanaungatanga relates to relationships and connection; manaakitanga to care and respect; kotahitanga to unity and togetherness; and aroha to love and compassion.
