📚 Part 1: Illustrated Glossary

WALT: We are learning to identify and use precise light- and sound-energy vocabulary.

Success criteria: I can match terms to definitions, explain one light process and one sound process, and use a scientific term accurately in a sentence.

Light terms are marked with 🟨. Sound terms are marked with 🟦.

🟨 Light vocabulary

1. 💡 Light source — An object that produces or emits light. Example: The torch is a light source because it emits light.

2. ↩️ Reflect — To bounce light back from a surface. Example: The mirror reflects light towards the screen.

3. ◼️ Absorb — To take in light energy. Example: The black card absorbs more light than the white card.

4. ➡️ Transmit — To allow light to pass through a material. Example: The plastic sheet transmits light to the other side.

5. 🔍 Transparent — Allowing most light through so objects can be seen clearly. Example: Clear glass is transparent.

6. 🌫️ Translucent — Allowing some light through, but scattering it so objects look unclear. Example: Frosted glass is translucent.

7. ⬛ Opaque — Blocking light so it cannot pass through. Example: Cardboard is opaque.

🟦 Sound vocabulary

8. 〰️ Vibration — A rapid back-and-forth movement. Example: The drum skin vibrates when it is struck.

9. 🎵 Pitch — How high or low a sound seems. Example: A short, fast-vibrating string produces a higher pitch.

10. 🔊 Volume — How loud or quiet a sound is. Example: The sound volume increased when the drum was struck harder.

11. 🔢 Frequency — The number of vibrations per second, measured in hertz (Hz). Example: A higher frequency produces a higher-pitched sound.

12. ↕️ Amplitude — The size of a vibration. It is related to how loud a sound is. Example: The larger amplitude made the sound louder.

13. 🔁 Echo — A sound heard again after it reflects from a surface. Example: We heard an echo when the sound reflected from the rock wall.

🧠 Part 3: Use Precise Scientific Language

Success criteria: I can replace vague words, use technical terms accurately, remove unsupported opinions, and explain at least four words in my glossary.

Rewrite this informal sentence: “The light got really bright and kind of spread everywhere.” Use a named light source and an observable description.

Write one light sentence and one sound sentence. Include at least one vocabulary term in each sentence.

Extension: Compare two precise terms, such as pitch and volume or transparent and translucent. Explain why they are not interchangeable.

Support choices

Picture-supported version: Use the icons and colour coding when matching terms to meanings.

Reduced card set: Begin with four cards: light source, reflect, vibration and volume.

Oral rehearsal: Say your sentence to a partner, use your first language to discuss the idea, then write it in English.

Dyslexia-friendly options: Use a sans-serif font, read one line at a time, track with a ruler or finger, listen to instructions, and take extra processing time.
