Persuasive Speech Planning Sheet

Plan and deliver a 45–60 second persuasive speech. Imagine you are speaking to your classmates about a change that could help people, animals or the environment in your local community. Use the prompts to plan, then listen carefully to a partner.

Build your argument

Choose a change you would like people to support. You could suggest planting more native trees, reducing rubbish at local events, adding a safe place to play, or another realistic idea.

1.Choose one issue for your speech. Write your idea as a short topic, not a full speech.
2.Who is your audience, and what do you want them to do or believe?
3.Which opening is most likely to grab an audience’s attention? Choose one.
  • “I am going to talk about trees.”
  • “Imagine a neighbourhood where tūī have nowhere to find food or shelter. Could we help change that?”
  • “Trees are plants with trunks and branches.”
4.Write your own hook: try a question, a surprising idea or an invitation to imagine something. Keywords and short phrases are fine.
5.State your opinion clearly in one sentence. You could begin, “I believe…” or “Our community should…”
6.Plan two different reasons to support your opinion. Add an example or detail for each reason.
7.Which sentence gives a reason and supports it with a detail? Choose one.
  • “Native trees are lovely. That is my opinion.”
  • “Plant native trees because they can provide food and shelter for local birds.”
  • “Please listen to my speech.”
8.Write a closing sentence that repeats your main message and gives the audience a clear next step.

Speak, listen and reflect

Take turns giving your speeches. While your partner speaks, listen for their opinion and reasons. Give feedback that is specific and kind.

9.Listen to your partner. Write their main opinion and one reason you heard.
10.Give your partner one specific strength and one helpful next step. For example, comment on clear reasons, an interesting hook, audible volume or eye contact.
11.Reflect on your own speech. Name one speaking choice that helped your audience, then set one goal for next time.
