The 1776 North Carolina Constitution

In 1776, North Carolina was prepared to establish its independence as a free state. The colonists had been engaged in armed resistance against British authority, and they sought to formulate their own government system. On December 18, 1776, North Carolina officially ratified its first state constitution, marking a pivotal moment in the colony's transformation.

This fundamental document outlined the framework for governing the newly independent state. The constitution created three different branches of government: the legislative branch to enact laws, the executive branch to implement laws, and the judicial branch to decide legal matters. This deliberate separation of powers was designed to prevent the concentration of authority in any single entity or individual.
