📖 Reading Passage: The Appalachian Mountains

The Appalachian Mountains are one of the oldest mountain ranges in North America. They stretch for about 2,000 miles from Canada all the way down to Alabama. These ancient mountains run through many states, including Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Unlike the tall, rocky peaks of the Rocky Mountains, the Appalachians are older and more rounded. Over millions of years, wind, rain, and ice have worn them down, making them gentler and more rolling. The highest peak is Mount Mitchell in North Carolina, which rises 6,684 feet above sea level.

The Appalachian Mountains are covered with thick forests full of oak, maple, and pine trees. In the fall, these forests create a beautiful display of red, orange, and yellow leaves that attracts visitors from around the world. Many animals call these mountains home, including black bears, deer, wild turkeys, and hundreds of bird species.

These mountains have been important to people for thousands of years. Native American tribes lived here long before European settlers arrived. Later, the mountains provided coal, timber, and other natural resources that helped build America. Today, millions of people visit the Appalachians to hike, camp, and enjoy nature. The famous Appalachian Trail runs for 2,190 miles through these mountains, giving hikers the chance to walk from Georgia to Maine!
