📖 Reading Passage: Mount Everest - The World's Tallest Mountain

Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world. It stands 29,032 feet high, which is more than 5 miles above sea level! This amazing mountain is located on the border between Nepal and Tibet in Asia.

Mount Everest is part of the Himalaya mountain range. The mountain has two main names. People in Nepal call it "Sagarmatha," which means "forehead of the sky." People in Tibet call it "Chomolungma," which means "mother goddess of the world."

Climbing Mount Everest is extremely dangerous and difficult. The air is very thin at the top, making it hard to breathe. Temperatures can drop to -76°F! Strong winds and sudden storms make climbing even more challenging. Despite these dangers, hundreds of people try to climb Everest every year.

The first people to successfully reach the top of Mount Everest were Sir Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa guide from Nepal. They made it to the summit on May 29, 1953. Since then, thousands of climbers have reached the top, but many others have not made it safely back down.

Mount Everest continues to grow taller each year! The mountain moves about one-quarter of an inch higher annually due to the movement of Earth's plates beneath it.
