Arkansas: Land, People, and Events

Arkansas has several kinds of land. The Ozark Mountains are in the north, the Ouachita Mountains are in the west, and a broad, low-lying region along the Mississippi River lies in the east. Indigenous nations, including the Osage, Quapaw, and Caddo, have deep connections to this region. Hernando de Soto explored the region in 1541. The Arkansas Territory was formed in 1819, and Arkansas joined the United States as a state in 1836. During the Civil War, Arkansas was divided in its loyalties. The Battle of Pea Ridge was fought in 1862. After the war, Reconstruction brought efforts to rebuild governments and communities. In 1957, nine Black students enrolled at Little Rock Central High School. Known as the Little Rock Nine, they faced opposition as they sought equal access to education. Daisy Bates supported them. Arkansas has three branches of state government. Rice cultivation, poultry, and timber are among its industries. Music, food, crafts, and festivals are part of the state’s culture.
