Nonfiction Reading Practice

Read the nonfiction passage about emperor penguins. Then answer the questions using details from the passage. Nonfiction gives information about real people, places, animals, or events.

Meet the Emperor Penguin

Emperor penguins are birds, but they cannot fly. They live in Antarctica, a very cold continent at the bottom of Earth. Their smooth feathers help keep them warm, and a thick layer of body fat also protects them from the cold. Beneath the feathers, emperor penguins have dark backs and pale bellies. Emperor penguins are strong swimmers. They use their flipper-like wings to move through the ocean in search of food. They eat fish, squid, and tiny sea animals called krill. In winter, a female emperor penguin lays one egg. The parents take turns caring for it. The male balances the egg on his feet and covers it with a warm fold of skin while the female goes to the ocean to find food. When the chick hatches, both parents help keep it warm and fed. Emperor penguins are the tallest and heaviest penguin species. These facts help scientists understand how the birds survive in one of Earth’s coldest places.
