The Mystery of the Missing Muffin

Ravi helped his aunt at the neighborhood bakery on Saturday morning. Their old dog, Scout, rested near the counter while warm muffins cooled on a tray. Ravi had baked one blueberry muffin especially for Scout, using a dog-safe recipe. He set it on a small plate beside Scout’s water bowl. Just then, the bakery door opened. A customer came in, and Ravi hurried to help. When he returned, the plate was empty. Scout was still lying by his bowl, but a few crumbs dotted the floor. Ravi noticed the back door was open a crack. Outside, a little brown dog from next door sniffed the step. Ravi did not want to accuse Scout without proof. He asked his aunt to help him look for clues. They found a blueberry crumb on the open door’s welcome mat. The neighbor came over and called her dog, Biscuit. Biscuit trotted inside panting, with a crumb on his nose! Ravi laughed. “Mystery solved!” he said. He gave Biscuit a fresh bowl of water and asked the neighbor to keep the back door shut. Then he brought Scout a new dog-safe muffin. Scout wagged his tail, and Ravi made a note: Next time, put the plate somewhere safe.
