Life in a Puritan Community

The Puritans were a religious group who came to America in the 1600s seeking freedom to practice their faith. They built small communities where everyone worked together and followed strict rules based on their religious beliefs.

Daily life for Puritan families was centered around hard work, education, and worship. Children attended school to learn reading, writing, and arithmetic, but they also had many chores. Boys helped their fathers with farming, fishing, or craftwork like carpentry. Girls helped their mothers with cooking, cleaning, sewing, and caring for younger children.

Puritan communities had strict rules about behavior and dress. People wore simple, dark-colored clothing without fancy decorations. They believed that plain dress showed humility and devotion to God. The community gathered twice on Sundays for long church services that could last several hours.

Education was very important to the Puritans because they wanted everyone to be able to read the Bible. Massachusetts passed the first law requiring towns to provide schools for children. This focus on learning helped create some of America's first colleges and established the value of public education.
