RACE Response Template

Read the passage about a wildlife sanctuary. Then use RACE—Restate, Answer, Cite evidence, Explain—to build a strong response. Use details from the passage, and write in complete sentences.

Read the Passage

A Safe Place for River Otters At Cedar Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, a young river otter arrived after being found alone beside a busy road. The animal-care team named him Scout. He was tired and wary of people, so the team gave him a quiet enclosure with a shallow pool and places to hide. The staff did not try to make Scout a pet. Their goal was to help him become strong enough to return to the wild. They placed fish in different spots so Scout could practise searching for food. They also added logs and smooth rocks to help him climb and explore. After several weeks, Scout began swimming longer distances and finding fish on his own. The team checked his health without handling him more than necessary. “Every time he solves a problem by himself, he is practising skills he will need outside,” explained a caretaker. Before release, the team chose a quiet stretch of creek with clean water, plenty of fish, and thick plants along the banks. They watched from a distance as Scout slipped into the water and disappeared beneath the reeds. The team felt proud, even though they knew they would miss him. Their success was not keeping Scout at the sanctuary; it was helping him live safely in the wild.
