The Joy Cart On rainy Tuesday afternoons, the community center's after-school room felt especially quiet. Most students hurried home as soon as the buses arrived. But Elijah noticed that the younger children who stayed to wait for their rides often looked bored and lonely. Elijah had an idea. With permission from the center director, Elijah decorated an old library cart with bright paper stars and filled it with picture books, puzzles, and blank cards. A sign on the cart read, “Borrow something—or make something—to brighten someone’s day.” Elijah called it the Joy Cart. At first, only a few children stopped by. One girl chose a puzzle but could not find its last piece. Elijah helped her search, and they found it under a chair. The girl laughed with relief. Then she drew a thank-you card for the next person who used the cart. Soon, children began adding their own ideas. Some left kind notes inside books. Others made paper bookmarks or taught a friend how to solve a puzzle. Even children who had once hurried straight to the door started lingering to see what was new. A month later, the director asked Elijah how the cart had become so popular. Elijah shrugged. “I thought I was bringing things for people to use,” Elijah said. “But they started bringing their own ideas, too.” The cart had not made the rainy afternoons shorter. It had made them feel less lonely—and given everyone a way to help.
