The Amazing Monarch Butterfly Migration

Every fall, millions of monarch butterflies begin one of nature's most incredible journeys. These orange and black butterflies travel up to 3,000 miles from Canada and the northern United States to central Mexico. What makes this migration so amazing is that the butterflies making the trip have never been to Mexico before – they are following a path their great-great-grandparents took.

The monarch butterflies use several methods to navigate during their long journey. They rely on the sun's position to stay on course and use air currents to help them fly long distances without getting too tired. Scientists have discovered that monarchs also use magnetic fields from the Earth to guide them, similar to how a compass works.

Unfortunately, monarch butterfly populations have decreased by 80% over the past 20 years. Habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change are the main threats to these remarkable insects. Conservation efforts are now underway to plant milkweed flowers and create butterfly gardens to help save the monarch migration for future generations.
