Cell Structures & Functions

A cell is struggling to stay healthy. Use the information and activities below to identify how its structures work together. Answer every question; use evidence from the cell guide when you can.

Meet the cell crew

Cells are the basic units of living things. Inside a cell, specialized structures called organelles do different jobs. The nucleus stores DNA and helps direct cell activities. Mitochondria are small organelles found in many eukaryotic cells that release usable energy from food. Ribosomes build proteins. The cell membrane controls what enters and leaves. Cytoplasm is the jelly-like material where many cell activities happen. Plant cells also have a sturdy cell wall for support, chloroplasts that capture light energy for photosynthesis, and a large central vacuole that stores water and other materials. Animal cells do not have a cell wall or chloroplasts. No organelle works alone: together, cell structures help the cell maintain stable conditions, called homeostasis.

Solve the cell case

Use the cell guide for Questions 1–9.

1.A cell needs to follow instructions stored in DNA. Which structure stores the DNA and helps direct cell activities?
  • Mitochondrion
  • Nucleus
  • Ribosome
  • Vacuole
2.A cell membrane is like a selective security gate. What does it do?
  • Builds proteins
  • Controls what enters and leaves the cell
  • Captures light for photosynthesis
  • Stores DNA
3.A cell is short on usable energy. Which organelle should the cell rely on to release energy from food?
4.Complete each sentence using the cell guide: Ribosomes build . Cytoplasm is the -like material where many cell activities happen.
5.Match each plant-cell structure to its main job.
  • Cell wall
  • Chloroplast
  • Large central vacuole
  • Captures light energy for photosynthesis
  • Provides sturdy support
  • Stores water and other materials
6.True or false: Animal cells have chloroplasts, but plant cells do not.
TrueFalse
7.A plant cell is placed in darkness for a while. Which structure cannot capture light energy during that time, and what process does it normally support?
8.Imagine the cell membrane stops controlling what passes through it. Describe one problem this could cause for the cell and explain why.
9.Cell Rescue: The nucleus directs activities, ribosomes build proteins, and mitochondria release energy from food. Explain how these structures can work together to help a cell repair itself.
10.Challenge: Why can a plant cell use light energy to make sugars, while an animal cell cannot? Use the names of the relevant cell structure and process.
