Character Role-Play Worksheet

At a castle visit, a sudden storm has trapped visitors inside the Great Hall. Work with a partner to role-play a short scene, listen carefully, and use evidence from the character cards to make your ideas believable. Take turns speaking; stay in role without interrupting.

Meet the characters

Read the cards. Choose one character to play. Your partner chooses another.

CALLUM — the young guide. You know visitors must stay in the Great Hall until the storm passes. You are responsible for everyone, but you are unsure whether a side door is safe.

OLIVER — the curious visitor. You spotted a loose shutter banging in the wind and want to help. You are impatient to act, but you do not want anyone to get hurt.

GEORGE — the caretaker. You have the keys and know the old building well. You are calm, but you have noticed that one of the keys is missing.

Plan and perform

In pairs, improvise a two-minute scene. Begin with the storm getting louder. Your characters must share what they know, ask each other questions, and decide what to do next. Use facial expression, posture, gesture and voice to show feelings. Then swap roles or replay the scene with a different decision.

1.Before you begin, write one thing your character wants and one thing they fear. Use details from the character card.
2.Which opening line would best invite another character into the scene?
  • “I saw the shutter banging. Can we check whether it is safe?”
  • “There is nothing to discuss.”
  • “I already know what everyone should do.”
  • “Let us all leave without asking anyone.”
3.Your partner says, “I think we should open the side door.” Write a response that shows you have listened, then adds a question or a reason.
4.In your performance, choose a voice and body clue to show your character’s strongest feeling. Name the feeling and describe both clues.
5.True or false: In a role-play discussion, listening well can mean changing your character’s response when you hear new information.
TrueFalse
6.George reveals that one key is missing. Write a question your character could ask to find out more without blaming him.
7.Match each speaking or listening choice to its likely effect.
  • Pause and let your partner finish
  • Speak more softly at a worrying moment
  • Repeat a key detail you heard
  • Can create tension or uncertainty
  • Checks understanding
  • Shows respect and gives time to think
8.During the scene, what new information did you hear from your partner? Explain how it changed, or could have changed, your character’s next action.
9.Choose the most convincing ending for a cooperative scene and explain why it works.
  • The characters share what they know, agree to wait safely, and ask George to check the building when the storm eases.
  • Everyone ignores the guide and rushes towards the door.
  • The characters stop speaking and leave the problem unresolved.
  • One character decides everything without hearing the others.
10.After performing, name one moment when a voice, gesture or facial expression helped you understand a character. What did it reveal?
