Creative Narrative Writing Workshop

Plan and write an original narrative set during a surprising moment at a local bakery. Use the bakery starter scene below, or take your story in a new direction. There is no single correct story; sample answers show one possible approach.

Read the starter scene

At 6:12 on Saturday morning, Ethan unlocked Sunrise Bakery. The ovens clicked on, and the sweet smell of cinnamon drifted through the shop. A sudden gust pushed the door open. A small paper bag skittered across the floor and stopped beside Amara, who was arranging muffins. Inside the bag was a warm, golden roll and a note: “Please deliver this before the bell rings.” From the town clock tower came one quiet chime.

Notice and imagine

Use details from the scene to launch your own story.

1.Which detail creates the biggest mystery, and what question does it make you wonder about?
2.Who will tell your story? Choose one: Ethan, Amara, a customer, or an object in the bakery. Explain one thing this narrator knows or notices that another narrator might miss.
3.Give your main character one strength, one worry, and one goal for this morning. How could the worry make reaching the goal harder?
4.Complete the story path: Beginning—what does the character want? Middle—what problem gets in the way? Ending—how does the character solve it?
Draw the moment when your character discovers a clue or faces the biggest obstacle. Add one detail that helps the reader understand the setting.
5.Choose two senses and write a detail for each that could bring your bakery scene to life. Avoid simply writing “it smelled good” or “it was loud.”

Shape your scene

Use action, dialogue, and carefully chosen words to make the story move.

6.Rewrite “Ethan was nervous” so the reader can infer how he feels from his actions or words.
7.Write one line your character might say when the problem appears. Use the words to reveal personality or emotion, and punctuate the dialogue correctly.
8.Replace the word “went” with a more exact verb: “Amara went across the bakery to the door when the bell chimed.”
9.Write a sentence that moves your character from the bakery to the next place in the story. Include a transition word or phrase and a detail about the journey.
10.Write a complete narrative of at least three paragraphs. Include a clear beginning, a problem, a solution, at least one line of dialogue, and two sensory details. Use your plan or invent your own ending.
11.Reread your draft. Name one place where you can replace a general word with a more precise one, and write the improved word or phrase.
12.Mark each item you included, then choose one improvement to make: a clear beginning, middle, and end; a character with a goal; a problem and solution; dialogue; sensory details; paragraphs and transition words.
