Day Night Cycle Test
A Day on a Spinning Earth
Earth is always turning, or rotating, like a slowly spinning top. It takes about 24 hours for Earth to complete one turn. The Sun does not travel around Earth each day. Instead, sunlight reaches the half of Earth facing the Sun. That half has daytime. The half turned away from the Sun is in darkness and has nighttime. As Earth turns, places move into sunlight and then out of it. Emily lives in a town where the Sun appears to rise in the direction opposite to where it appears to set. In the morning, her town turns toward the Sun. Around noon, the Sun looks high in the sky. In the evening, her town turns away from the Sun, so the Sun appears to set in the west. While Emily is asleep at night, people on the other side of Earth may be enjoying their daytime.
