Fate and Free Will Discussion

Explore whether people shape their own futures or are shaped by forces beyond their control. Read the scenario, prepare evidence and take part in a respectful small-group discussion. There is no single correct position: support your ideas with reasons, listen carefully and respond to others.

The crossroads

Evie has been offered a place in a regional music programme. The first rehearsal is on the same afternoon as an important family event, and the programme requires a long trip each week. Evie has practised for years and wants to accept. Her family needs her help that afternoon, and the cost of travel is a concern. Evie could ask for another arrangement, but she does not know whether one is possible. She says, “Maybe this was never meant to happen.” Her brother replies, “It’s your decision—but every choice has consequences.”

Prepare to speak and listen

Use the questions below to prepare. During the discussion, take turns, refer to the scenario and build on or respectfully challenge ideas. Useful prompts: “I see it differently because…” · “What makes you think that?” · “Building on that idea…” · “A consequence might be…”

1.Which two forces make Evie’s decision difficult? Choose the strongest answer and explain it aloud in one sentence.
  • Her personal ambition and her family responsibilities
  • Her dislike of music and her fear of performing
  • Her friends’ opinions and a lack of practice
  • A promise to travel and a broken instrument
2.Complete this claim, then give one reason: “Evie has / does not have meaningful control over what happens next because…”
3.Name one circumstance Evie may not control and one action she could choose to take.
4.Evie says, “Maybe this was never meant to happen.” What might she mean? Offer one interpretation, then ask your group a follow-up question.
5.Choose one possible decision Evie could make. Predict one likely consequence for her and one for someone else.
6.A classmate says, “If Evie really wants the programme, she should just go.” Respond respectfully: acknowledge one part of the idea, then add a different perspective.
7.In a group, discuss: “Are people responsible for choices when their options are limited?” Each person should contribute a claim, a reason and a response to someone else. Record one idea that changed, challenged or strengthened your thinking.
8.During the discussion, note one idea from another speaker that differs from yours. Paraphrase it fairly before explaining whether you agree.
9.After listening to your group, state whether you think Evie’s future is mostly shaped by fate, free will or a mixture of both. Support your judgement with a detail from the scenario and one idea raised in discussion.
10.Choose the statement that best describes a useful discussion habit. Then name one habit you used today and one to practise next time.
  • Listen to understand, then respond to the idea rather than judging the speaker
  • Repeat your own point until everyone agrees
  • Interrupt quickly so your idea is not forgotten
  • Avoid asking questions in case someone disagrees
