Frankenstein Text Illustration Analysis

Read the passage, then use its details to explain how the words shape your understanding. The passage is an original classroom adaptation inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; it is not a quotation from the novel.

A watcher at the cottage

Victor Frankenstein’s creature has been hiding near a small cottage. Through a crack in the wall, he has listened to the family inside. They speak gently to one another, and their kindness makes him hope that they might accept him. In this original adaptation, the creature approaches the cottage one evening. The creature stopped at the door. His hand hovered above the wooden latch, then fell to his side. Warm light spilled through the window, but he could not make himself step into it. His coat hung in torn folds, and rain shone on his dark hair. From inside came the soft scrape of a chair and a voice asking, “Is someone there?” He backed away. He had wanted to be seen, but now he feared what the family might see. In the glass, his reflection looked strange even to him. He turned toward the trees, carrying his hope and his fear into the darkness.
