Grade 5 Opinion Writing

Choose a topic, plan your argument, and draft an opinion piece. Use reasons and specific examples to support your position. Then review and revise your writing.

Choose and Plan Your Opinion

Select a topic below, or write a different school-appropriate topic. You can take either side.

1.Which topic will you write about? Choose one, or add your own: students should be allowed to choose some classroom reading; schools should offer more hands-on science activities; students should have a voice in planning school lunches; or my own topic: ____.

2.Write one sentence that clearly states your opinion about your chosen topic.

3.Record three different reasons that could persuade a reader to agree with your opinion.

4.What might a reader who disagrees say about your topic? Write one reasonable opposing viewpoint.

Use your plan to write a beginning, develop your reasons with details, and finish with a conclusion.

6.Draft an introduction. Begin with an engaging hook, give readers enough context, and state your opinion clearly.

7.Write a body paragraph that explains your strongest reason. Include a specific example or detail that helps show why the reason matters.

8.Write a second body paragraph for another reason. Use a linking phrase to show how this point adds to your argument.
