Healthy Relationships Role-Play

At the school radio station, a disagreement is interrupting the team’s planning. Work through the scenarios to practise respectful communication, boundaries and ways to seek support. You can answer from the characters’ point of view; you do not need to share personal experiences.

Read the scenario

Freya, Kahu and Sione are preparing a short school radio segment. Kahu has not sent in his audio clip, so Freya says, “You never do your part.” Kahu replies, “Stop bossing me around.” Sione notices both are frustrated and suggests they pause. Kahu explains that he is unsure how to edit the audio and felt embarrassed to ask. Freya says she was worried the segment would miss its deadline. They agree to split the editing into smaller steps, check in after lunch and ask the radio supervisor for help if needed. Before they finish, Kahu adds that he does not want his personal worries discussed on air. Freya agrees to keep them private.

1.What is the main issue between Freya and Kahu, and what does each person seem to need?

3.Identify one personal factor, one interpersonal factor and one social factor that could influence this disagreement. Use an example from the scenario for each.

4.Choose one of the options below for the most constructive opening Freya could use to raise the issue. Explain why it is helpful.

5.Role-play: With a partner, act out the moment Sione helps the conversation restart. Include one active-listening response that reflects or checks what someone has said, one respectful “I” statement and one open question. Write the lines you would use.

6.Kahu says he does not want his personal worries discussed on air. Is this a reasonable boundary? What should the others do?

7.Match each communication move to its purpose.
