How Geography Shaped Ancient Rome

Ancient Rome was built on seven hills beside the Tiber River. This location gave the city protection from enemies and access to fresh water. Being near the Mediterranean Sea allowed Romans to trade goods with other civilizations. The fertile land helped farmers grow food for the population.

Because of this geography, Rome became a powerful empire. The city grew, and Roman culture developed, including roads, laws, and public buildings. These cultural features helped Rome govern its vast territories.

Roman law, building techniques like arches and aqueducts, and their language — Latin — influence many parts of the world even today. For example, many English words come from Latin, and modern cities still use arches in architecture. The idea of a government with laws protecting citizens also comes from Rome.
