The Spring Surprise

On a chilly March morning, Carlos and her brother Andre visited a little garden near the place where they lived. In the fall, they had tucked a few flower seeds into the soil with their neighbor, Ms. Rivera. They watered the patch now and then, but after winter they could not see anything growing. “Maybe the seeds are still sleeping,” said Andre. Carlos gently cleared away a dry leaf. Beneath it, two tiny green shoots poked through the soil! The children hurried to tell Ms. Rivera. Together, they pulled a few weeds and watered the garden. Each week, the shoots grew taller. Soon, bright yellow and purple flowers opened in the warm sunshine. A bee buzzed from flower to flower. Carlos and Andre had expected to find an empty patch. Instead, they found a garden full of color. They made a small sign that read, “Welcome, Spring!” Then they promised to help care for the flowers all season.
