In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, changing the way people communicated forever. Before the telephone, people had to send letters or travel long distances to speak with others. Bell's invention allowed voices to travel through wires across great distances.

The first telephone call was made on 10th March 1876, when Bell spoke to his assistant in another room, saying "Mr Watson, come here, I want to see you." This simple sentence marked the beginning of a communication revolution.

Early telephones were very different from today's mobile phones. They had large wooden boxes, metal speaking tubes, and operators who connected calls by hand. People had to turn a handle and ask an operator to connect them to the person they wanted to call.

By the 1950s, dial telephones became popular. Instead of asking operators for help, people could dial numbers themselves. The telephone became common in Australian homes, connecting families and friends across the country.

Today, almost everyone carries a mobile phone. We can call, text, take photos, and access the internet from anywhere. The telephone has evolved from Bell's simple invention into the powerful smartphones we use every day.
