Homeschool science curriculum: what to teach at every age, and how to keep it hands-on
Science is the subject homeschool families most often put off, and the one children most often name as their favorite once it actually happens. The gap is almost always logistics: the experiment needs vinegar you do not have, the textbook assumes a lab, the video is twenty minutes of talking before anything moves. A good homeschool science curriculum solves logistics first and content second.
This guide lays out what a child should meet in science from the early years to high school, how many days a week it realistically needs, which programs families actually finish, and the mistakes that turn science into a worksheet subject. It is written for secular and faith-based families alike; where a program takes a position on origins, we say so.
Scope by age
What science looks like at each stage
Use this as a checklist, not a schedule. Children move through it at their own pace, and a strong year can cover two stages.
Early years and K–2
Ages 4–8- Observation before explanation: weather logs, seed jars, magnifying glasses, a nature table that changes each week.
- Living things and their needs, seasons and weather, simple pushes and pulls, floating and sinking, light and shadow.
- Vocabulary through use, not lists. A six-year-old who says 'predict' because you say it during experiments has learned it.
- One question per week the child can answer with their hands. Nothing needs writing down yet beyond a drawing and a label.
Grades 3–5
Ages 8–11- The fair test: changing one thing, keeping the rest the same, recording what happened. This is the core skill of elementary science.
- Life cycles, food chains and habitats, states of matter, simple circuits, forces and simple machines, the solar system, rocks and the water cycle.
- A science notebook with dated entries, labelled diagrams and a sentence or two of conclusion.
- Reading nonfiction: a library book on the topic each week does more than any textbook chapter.
Middle school (6–8)
Ages 11–14- Cells and body systems, genetics basics, chemistry of matter (atoms, elements, reactions), energy and waves, plate tectonics and Earth's history, ecosystems.
- Measurement with real units and real error: mass, volume, temperature, time, and graphing results.
- Longer investigations that run over days, and at least one written lab report per term with method, results and conclusion.
- Reading scientific explanations critically: what evidence supports this claim, and what would change our mind?
High school (9–12)
Ages 14–18- The usual sequence is biology, then chemistry, then physics, with earth or environmental science as a fourth credit. Colleges generally want three lab sciences.
- Each credit is roughly 120–150 hours, of which a quarter should be hands-on lab work you document for the transcript.
- Math readiness matters: chemistry needs confident algebra, physics needs algebra and some trigonometry.
- Dual enrollment at a community college is a strong option for chemistry and physics if you do not want to teach them yourself.
A weekly rhythm that gets done

Avoid these
Mistakes that make science harder than it needs to be
- Buying a textbook for a seven-year-old. Under age nine, science should be almost entirely observation and doing. Reading comes second.
- Skipping the experiment because the supplies are missing. Keep a labelled science box: vinegar, baking soda, balloons, string, magnets, food coloring, a thermometer, a magnifying glass, a kitchen scale.
- Testing recall instead of thinking. Ask what would happen if we changed one thing, not what is the definition of a solid.
- Choosing a program for its worldview and then resenting its pedagogy. Decide how you want science taught first, then filter by worldview.
- Waiting until high school to write anything. A middle schooler who has written eight short lab reports is ready for biology; one who has never written a conclusion is not.

What is the best homeschool science curriculum?
For secular families in grades 1–8, Real Science Odyssey is the most consistently finished program because every lesson is an activity. Christian families most often choose Apologia, especially for high school. If budget is tight, a library book a week plus one experiment and Khan Academy or CK-12 for explanations covers elementary science well.
How many days a week should we do science?
Two or three. A reading or video day and an experiment day is enough through grade 8. Daily science is only necessary in high school, where each lab-science credit needs around 120–150 hours across the year.
Do I need a science kit?
Not for elementary. A shoebox of household supplies covers most of K–5. Kits become worth it in middle school for circuits and microscopes, and in high school for chemistry, where you also need proper safety equipment.
Which science should a homeschooler take in 9th grade?
Biology is the usual first credit because it needs the least math. Physical science first is fine if algebra is not yet solid. Plan for three lab sciences by graduation if college is likely.
How do I make a homeschool science curriculum for free?
Pick a topic list from your state standards or the Next Generation Science Standards, use library nonfiction as the spine, Khan Academy or CK-12 for explanations, and run one experiment a week from a book like the Usborne Science Activities series.
