Biology is usually the first high-school science a homeschooler takes, because it needs the least math and the most curiosity. It is also the one where families most often skip the labs, which is the part colleges care about. What biology looks like at each stage
Use this as a checklist, not a schedule. Children move through it at their own pace, and a strong year can cover two stages.
Before biology (grades 6–8)
Ages 11–14- Life science foundations: cells, classification, body systems, genetics basics, ecosystems.
- Microscope skills: preparing a slide, focusing, drawing what is seen with a scale.
- Reading nonfiction science and writing a short lab report.
The biology year (usually grade 9 or 10)
Ages 14–16- Units: the chemistry of life, cells and cell processes, genetics and DNA, evolution and classification, ecology, plants, animals, and human body systems.
- Ten to fifteen labs across the year: microscope work, osmosis, enzymes, photosynthesis, dissection (real or virtual), genetics with Punnett squares, a field ecology study.
- A lab notebook with dated entries and at least four formal lab reports.
- About 150 hours in total, with a quarter of that hands-on, to call it a lab science on the transcript.
After biology
Ages 15–18- Chemistry next, then physics, or an advanced biology elective such as anatomy and physiology, marine biology or AP Biology.
- Dual enrollment biology at a community college if the student wants college credit and a real lab.

Avoid these
Mistakes that make biology harder than it needs to be
- No labs. A biology course without documented lab work is not a lab science, and colleges notice.
- No microscope. A $100–$150 student microscope is the single best purchase for a biology year.
- Reading the whole textbook. Most texts have more than a year's content; pick the core units and go deep.
- Choosing the text for its position on origins and then fighting its pedagogy. Decide how you want it taught first.
- Not logging hours. 150 hours is the standard for a credit; if you did not count, you cannot claim.

How many labs make biology a lab science?
There is no legal number, but ten to fifteen documented labs, or about a quarter of the course hours hands-on, is what most colleges and evaluators expect.
