K–5: the household science box (about $30–$60)
- A labelled box with: magnifying glass, a cheap thermometer, a kitchen scale, measuring cups and spoons, droppers, balloons, string, food colouring, vinegar, baking soda, magnets, a small set of marbles and ramps, tweezers, jars, a torch.
- Add: a bug viewer, a nature notebook, a set of seeds and pots, a simple pulley or set of gears.
- Kits worth it at this age: Snap Circuits Jr. (electricity, ages 8+), a Thames & Kosmos or National Geographic kit on a topic the child loves, a butterfly or triops kit for life cycles.
- Skip: chemistry sets for under-tens (mostly colour changes), telescopes (binoculars are better), anything that promises 100 experiments (you will do six).
Grades 6–8: the first real tools (about $150–$300)
- A student microscope with real glass optics, 40x–400x, LED light, about $100–$150. The single best middle-school purchase. Prepared slides plus blank slides and cover slips.
- Snap Circuits (full set) or a breadboard kit, a multimeter, and a set of magnets: electricity and magnetism become hands-on.
- A digital scale to 0.1 g, graduated cylinders, beakers, safety goggles, a spirit thermometer: measurement with real units.
- A rock and mineral collection with a streak plate and hardness kit; a dissecting kit with an owl pellet or a preserved specimen for life science.

Safety, briefly
- Goggles for every lab from middle school, no exceptions; it is a habit, not a rule.
- An adult present for any chemistry; a cleared surface; no eating; a fire extinguisher or wet towel within reach.
- Use kit chemicals in kit quantities. The dangerous homeschool labs are the improvised ones.
- Store chemicals and specimens out of reach of younger children; label everything.
