A day of remembrance

ANZAC Day is observed in New Zealand each year on the anniversary of the 1915 Gallipoli landing. The date remembers the landing of Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) troops at Gallipoli, in what is now Türkiye, in 1915. The landing began a difficult campaign during the First World War. Many people were killed or wounded, and the troops eventually left Gallipoli later that year. ANZAC Day is not a celebration of war. It is a time to remember people who served and those who died in wars and other military operations. It also gives people a chance to think about the effects of conflict on families and communities. Many communities hold dawn services on this anniversary. People may listen to speeches, observe a quiet silence, lay wreaths or wear red poppies. The poppy is one symbol of remembrance. People also remember values such as courage, service, mateship and sacrifice. These words can help us consider how people supported one another, while recognising that war brought loss and hardship.
