The museum guide’s talk
Today we are looking at an early printing press. Before printing presses became common, books were copied by hand. This took a long time, so books were expensive and few people owned them. In the 1400s, Johannes Gutenberg developed a printing system using movable metal letters. A printer arranged the letters to form words, covered them with ink, and pressed paper against them. The letters could be rearranged and used again. Printing made it possible to produce many copies of a book more quickly. As books became easier to obtain, ideas and information could reach more people. Remember: movable type means reusable letters that can be arranged to print words.
