Mill Creek: A Town Changes

Mill Creek began as a small settlement beside a creek crossing. In 1852, a ferry carried people and goods across the creek. A handwritten diary entry from that year says, “We wait for the ferry before taking our wheat to market.” In 1878, a wooden bridge replaced the ferry. A newspaper report from the time celebrated the bridge because wagons could cross in more kinds of weather. A school opened in 1891, and the first class had 22 students. In 1936, residents organized a flood-relief effort after the creek overflowed. A photograph caption from that year reads, “Neighbors fill sandbags near the old bridge.” In 1974, the town converted the former school building into a public library. Today, the bridge, library, and creek crossing are reminders of how transportation, education, and community cooperation shaped Mill Creek.
