📖 Reading Passage: The Amazing Colorado River

The Colorado River is one of America's most important waterways. Starting high in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, this mighty river flows 1,450 miles through seven states before reaching Mexico. Along its journey, the Colorado River has created some of the most spectacular landforms on Earth.

The river's most famous creation is the Grand Canyon in Arizona. For millions of years, the flowing water has slowly carved through layers of rock, creating a canyon that is over one mile deep and 18 miles wide at some points. The canyon walls reveal colorful bands of rock that tell the story of Earth's history.

As the Colorado River winds through different landscapes, it creates various landforms. In some areas, it forms wide valleys with fertile floodplains perfect for farming. In other places, it cuts through narrow gorges between towering cliffs. The river also creates deltas where it deposits sediment, building up new land over time.

The Colorado River doesn't just shape the land - it also provides water for over 40 million people in the southwestern United States. Dams along the river create reservoirs that store water for cities and farms. However, so much water is used that the river often runs dry before reaching the ocean.
