Farmers and Townspeople

Read the passage. Then answer each question using details from the text.

A Community Works Together

Before many roads and stores reached faraway places, farms and small towns relied on one another. Rosa lived on a farm a few miles from town. In spring, she planted two crops: a small legume and a grain used for food. During summer, she watered the plants and cared for her goats. When the crops were ready as autumn arrived, Rosa loaded baskets onto a wagon and brought them to town. In town, Mr. Lee ran a mill that turned grain into flour. A baker used the flour to make loaves of bread. The town had other useful workers, too. A tailor sewed strong clothes, and a shopkeeper sold lamps, soap, and other supplies. At the weekly market, Rosa exchanged some of her crops for flour, a repaired tool, and a warm coat. Town families bought fresh food from farmers like Rosa. Farmers got goods and help that were hard to make on their own. By sharing their work and trading what they had, people in the farm and town could meet more of their needs.
