Homeschool health curriculum

Homeschool health curriculum: body, mind and safety, taught the way you want it taught

Health is one of the subjects families most want to teach themselves, and one they most often forget to schedule. It covers the body and how to look after it, nutrition, mental and emotional health, safety, relationships and, when the family decides, puberty and sexuality. It is required for high-school graduation in many states.

This guide gives you a scope by age that you can adapt to your values, a light rhythm that fits into life rather than adding another subject, and the programs families use across the spectrum from secular to faith-based.

Scope by age

What health looks like at each stage

Use this as a checklist, not a schedule. Children move through it at their own pace, and a strong year can cover two stages.

Early years and K–2

Ages 4–8
  • Body basics: parts of the body, the five senses, what the heart and lungs do, why we sleep.
  • Hygiene habits: handwashing, teeth, toileting, sneezing into elbows, all taught as routine.
  • Food groups and the idea of a balanced plate, taught in the kitchen with real food.
  • Safety: road, water, fire, strangers, and the words for private parts and the right to say no.
  • Feelings: naming them, noticing them in others, simple calming strategies.

Grades 3–5

Ages 8–11
  • Body systems in more depth, usually alongside science: digestion, circulation, skeleton and muscles, the brain.
  • Nutrition labels, sugar, hydration, and cooking simple meals.
  • Exercise and sleep as habits with reasons; screen time and its effects.
  • Friendship, conflict, bullying and online safety.
  • Puberty introduced before it arrives, in the family's own terms, around ages nine to eleven.

Grades 6–8

Ages 11–14
  • Puberty in detail, reproductive health and the family's approach to sexuality and relationships.
  • Mental health: stress, anxiety, depression, where to get help, and healthy coping.
  • Substances: alcohol, vaping, drugs, and the science of addiction.
  • First aid and CPR, ideally with a certified course.
  • Media literacy: advertising, body image, social media and its effects.

High school

Ages 14–18
  • A half-credit health course, required for graduation in many states, covering nutrition, fitness, mental health, substances, relationships, disease prevention and safety.
  • Practical life skills: cooking, budgeting for food, navigating healthcare, consent and healthy relationships.
  • Personal fitness plans and tracking, often combined with PE for a full credit.
  • Driver safety, first aid certification and babysitting or lifeguard courses count toward the credit.

A weekly rhythm that gets done

Homeschool health does not need a school timetable. This is what a sustainable week looks like for most families.

How often
1 day a week, plus life
How long
15 min (K–5), 30 min (6–8), 45–60 min for the high-school credit

One short lesson a week, most of it conversation, with the rest taught in the kitchen, the car and at bedtime. In high school, run it as a one-semester course so the credit is clean.

Honest comparison

Health programs homeschool families actually finish

Prices are approximate and change; check the publisher. We note worldview because it matters to families on both sides, not to recommend one.

ProgramApproachPriceBest for
Total Health (Susan Boe)

Widely used for the high-school credit. Abstinence-based approach to sexuality; comprehensive on nutrition, fitness and mental health.

Faith-basedAbout $40–$80 per levelA traditional middle and high-school health textbook from a Christian perspective
Evan-Moor and Scholastic health workbooks

Simple units on body, nutrition and safety. Fine as a spine for K–5 when combined with real-life practice.

SecularAbout $15–$25Elementary health in worksheet form
Khan Academy Health & Medicine and KidsHealth.org

KidsHealth has parent, kid and teen sections on almost every topic; Khan Academy covers the science of body systems and disease for older students.

SecularFreeFree video and article content at every level
American Red Cross and local first-aid courses

A one-day course gives a teenager a real qualification and a memorable health unit.

NeutralAbout $40–$100First aid and CPR certification that counts on a transcript
Sex-education resources by worldview

Secular families often use the It's Perfectly Normal series or Amaze.org videos; Christian families often use God's Design for Sex or the Passport2Purity kit. Choose deliberately.

NeutralBooks about $10–$20Teaching puberty and sexuality in line with your family's values

Avoid these

Mistakes that make health harder than it needs to be

  • Skipping it because it feels like common sense. Health is required for graduation in many states, and the mental-health and substance topics need actual teaching.
  • Leaving puberty until it happens. Children who hear it from a parent at nine or ten handle it far better than those who hear it from friends at twelve.
  • Buying a textbook for a seven-year-old. Elementary health is habits, conversation and the kitchen.
  • Treating mental health as a crisis topic. Naming feelings at five and discussing stress at twelve makes the hard conversations at sixteen possible.
  • Forgetting to document it. Log the topics, the courses and the certifications; it is an easy credit to show if you kept notes.

Health homeschool FAQ

Is health required for homeschool?

Many US states list health among required subjects, and a half-credit of health is a common high-school graduation requirement. Check your state's guide. Outside the US it is generally expected but not tested.

What is the best homeschool health curriculum?

For a high-school credit from a Christian perspective, Total Health. For secular free content, KidsHealth.org and Khan Academy. For elementary, a workbook plus real life. Add a first-aid course for a practical, certified unit.

How do I teach sex education in homeschool?

Decide your family's approach first, then choose a resource that matches it (Amaze.org and It's Perfectly Normal for a secular approach; God's Design for Sex or Passport2Purity for a Christian one). Introduce puberty around nine to eleven, before it arrives, and keep the conversation open.

How much time should health take?

One short lesson a week in elementary, most of it conversation. In high school, a one-semester course of roughly 60–75 hours gives a clean half-credit.

Can health and PE be combined?

Yes, many families combine them into a single PE/Health credit in high school, with fitness logs alongside the health topics. Check your state's graduation requirements to see whether they must be separate.

Program details and prices change. Verify with the publisher before buying, and check your state's guide for what is required.
