Fitness Testing Baseline

Use the sample results and scenario below to practise interpreting a fitness baseline and setting a useful goal. A baseline is a starting point, not a judgement. Fitness tests are only snapshots: results can be affected by sleep, effort, health, conditions and test technique. Take part safely, follow your teacher’s instructions and stop if you feel unwell or injured. Keep your results private and treat other people’s results respectfully.

The baseline data

Sione completed four tests during a supervised PE session. Her results are recorded below. These sample results are for the worksheet scenario; they are not a prediction of what any student should achieve.

Test

Fitness component

Result

20 m shuttle run

Cardiorespiratory endurance

Level 6.4

Press-ups in 60 seconds

Muscular endurance

18 repetitions

Sit-and-reach

Flexibility

24 cm

Standing long jump

Lower-body power

Read, reason and plan

Use the scenario and results table to answer each question. Explain your thinking where asked; there may be more than one reasonable personal goal.

1.Which test in Sione’s results gives information about cardiorespiratory endurance?
  • 20 m shuttle run
  • Sit-and-reach
  • Standing long jump
  • Press-ups
2.Sione wants to build muscular endurance. Which result is most relevant, and what was her result?
3.Sione says, “My shuttle-run level proves I am fitter than everyone who stopped at a lower level.” Is this a fair conclusion? Explain one reason.
4.Match each test to the fitness component it is designed to assess.
  • Sit-and-reach
  • Standing long jump
  • 20 m shuttle run
  • Press-ups in 60 seconds
  • Lower-body power
  • Muscular endurance
  • Flexibility
  • Cardiorespiratory endurance
5.Sione repeats her sit-and-reach test after a training block and reaches 27 cm. How many centimetres higher is this than her baseline of 24 cm? Show the subtraction.
6.Which is the strongest SMART goal based on Sione’s baseline?
  • I will get much fitter soon.
  • I will improve my fitness by doing more exercise.
  • For the next six weeks, I will do two safe, teacher-approved aerobic sessions each week and repeat the same shuttle-run test under similar conditions at the end.
  • I will reach level 10 by next week, whatever happens.
7.Write a SMART goal of your own for one fitness component. Include what you will do, how often or how you will measure progress, and a time frame. Make it realistic and safe.
8.Sione feels dizzy during a fitness test. What should she do next, and why?
9.Why should Sione avoid treating a body-composition number such as BMI as a complete measure of her health or fitness, especially as a teenager?
10.Choose two dimensions of hauora (taha tinana, taha hinengaro, taha whānau, taha wairua). Explain one way a supportive fitness goal could benefit each dimension.
